If you choose to celebrate Easter on the island of Hvar, Croatia, come and join me on the traditional night procession Za križen [za kri?en] (local vernacular Croatian for "Following the Cross") that takes place on every Maundy Thursday since 1510. Let me be your guide on this religious event that is a unique spiritual experience.
The Procession lasts for 8 hours (25 km) and it is a unique ceremony of a special piety, and an expression of a religious and cultural identity.
Passing through the 6 villages (Vrbanj, Vrboska, Jelsa, Pitve, Vrisnik and Svirce.) included in the Procession, the Participants of the Procession show their piety in every of the churches on the way, led by a Crossbearer that caries its own Cross.
During the way, the Pilgrims pray and sing, and particularly impressive is the singing of the Gospin pla? (Croatian: Weeping of the Lady) in the original form. It is interesting that every Procession sings it on its own way!
Come and join me!
